Growing plastic-free with a herb garden

Three little steps

Plastic Free Herb Garden

When it comes to going plastic-free, I couldn’t let the children have all the fun. I put on my plastic free thinking cap and came up with a perfect plan for reducing plastic and making my life more fun. Because the children helped us create the perfect mini veggie plot, it’s my turn to get planting. I’m an enthusiastic home-cook and also a busy mother. I love to create healthy meals for the family. Preferably ones I can make without slaving away for hours in the kitchen. Herbs play a big part in this. From ribbons of basil in our no-cook, raw tomato sauce or sage on top of simply ravioli – herbs add all the flavour. Without adding any nasties. What better way to go than to have our own plastic free herb garden?

So, step 3 for going plastic free with a young family:

Project Plastic Free Herb Garden is a vital part of our journey. In the past, I have been guilty of ordering the odd pack of fresh herbs each week. All wrapped in plastic for no reason whatsoever. Plastic which ends up in landfill – for hundreds of years. Never again.

So, the girls’ grandad got handy with an old pallet, a saw, some nails and a hammer to whip me up some stepped planters. I am over the moon. As a result thyme, sage, rosemary, chives and mint are now all growing and flourishing in a nice sunny spot in our garden. All I need to do is take a trip down the garden with my scissors and there we are – the freshest of fresh herbs and not a speck of plastic in sight (unless it’s raining and I need my wellies). Now to get the girls on the watering and put my feet up. Mojito anyone?
